Literature and Society

Module code: SAC3012-B

Module Aims

Literature and Society explores the interplay between social theory and the more individualistic concerns of literary culture.

Outline Syllabus

This module explores how literary texts and movements can be understood as 'reflections' of society and vice versa. More specifically, emphasis is placed on the manner in which literary works can be read in conversation with, and in opposition to, social movements. For example:
1. Analyse two Shakespearean plays and discuss how social norms can influence how readers understand gender and sexuality at different historical moments.
2. The Enlightenment and the French Revolution in context of the Romantic Movement.
3. Kafka and Existentialism.
4. Victorian fiction, Psychoanalysis and Symbolism in Robert Louis Stevenson.
