Module Aims       

You will develop an understanding of the governmental framework within which social policy is made and administered. Whilst concentrating on political structures and processes, some reference is made to contemporary social policy programmes and priorities. To introduce concepts necessary to analyse contemporary society, politics and welfare and to provide a basis for further study.

Outline Syllabus  

The structure and machinery of central government in Britain: Prime Minister, Cabinet, Civil Service, Parliament; the workings of local government and the provision of services to the community; the contribution of external actors to the governmental policy-making process: the European Union (in which, as a member,  Britain plays a significant role), political parties, pressure groups, the mass media, the judiciary; an introduction to the main academic debates concerning the contemporary policy process in Britain. Foundations of the welfare state; social policy provision in health, welfare, housing, education and social care. Political parties, governance and the British State. Institutions of, agents of and contributors to the UK policy process. As European Union members the course.
