The Sociological Imagination

Module code: SAC3002-B

Module Aims

You will develop an understanding of some of the key themes, concepts and perspectives within Sociology.

Outline Syllabus

The module will examine the nature of Sociology showing how personal experiences may be interpreted as being elements of wider social processes and structures. This will entail developing a sociological imagination, posing questions about how sociologists gain knowledge of the social world and exploring issues of self-knowledge, cultural differences, and the practical significance of the discipline. Key concepts to be addressed will include culture, socialisation, structure and agency, gender and sexuality, race and ethnicity and class and stratification. References will be made to both structural and interactionist theories and perspectives such as Marxism, Functionalism and Feminism. Empirical case studies on globalisation and modern urban living will focus and consolidate disciplinary learning.
