Research Appreciation and Dissemination

Module Aims

(1) Develop the students knowledge and understanding of research principles, methodologies and methods for data capture and analysis through comprehensive literature retrieval and the critical appraisal of research based evidence associated with a topic relevant to clinical practice.  (2) Scrutinise the relevance and implications of the findings that emerge from this comprehensive critical appraisal to practice.  (3) Promote the dissemination of findings in formats suitable for a professional audience.  (4) Foster the development of professional academic writing skills.

Outline Syllabus

Evidence based practice. The use of electronic databases for the identification of relevant literature. Frameworks for comprehensive search and retrieval of relevant literature. Overview of quantitative and qualitative research and data collection methods. comprehensive appraisal skills including; methodological issues, rigour, reliability and validity.Frameworks for comprehensive literature review and appraisal. Writing for publication. Time management and effective use of supervision. Critical thinking and reflective analysis. Presentation skills including style, editorial issues, getting messages across. Poster presentation skills (including use of powerpoint). Oral presentation skills (including use of powerpoint).
