Advanced Physical Assessment and Clinical Decision Making Skills (Level 7)

Module Aims

To provide students with an understanding of the theory,  concepts, skills, practice and management of the consultation process. Students  will acquire advanced knowledge and expertise to undertake  a comprehensive clinical history and skilled physical assessment. Students willdevelop the in-depth knowledge and understanding of the evidence base that underpins clinical decision making and critically explore the interprofessional context of care-delivery  and professional boundaries.

Outline Syllabus

Anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology of systems: cardiovascular, respiratory, neurological, gastrointestinal, musculo-skeletal, integumentary, eye and ENT, including consideration of socio-cultural, demographic and economic factors and risk factors of disease. Comprehensive health history taking and problem focused history taking. Comprehensive physical assessment and examination and interpretation of clinical findings. Communication strategies, consultation models and tools. Clinical decision making processes.Professional aspects: documentation, record keeping, accountability, risk assessment and management. Multi-disciplinary and interprofessional team work, ethical aspects and consent.Principles of Health and Safety legislation and policy relevant to persons, procedures, identification of risks and hazards. Health policy relating to infection control, specimens and equipment use, notifiable diseases.
