Module Aims

This module will support development of the NMC standards for pre- registration midwifery education (NMC 2009). It will develop skills and attitudes that will enable the student to demonstrate professional conduct and to achieve clinical competency in the care, monitoring and support of women and their families during pregnancy and puerperium (NMC 2009, NMC 2015).

Outline Syllabus

Communication skills; Antenatal assessment; Postnatal assessment; Care planning and implementation in antenatal and postnatal periods; Breastfeeding and artificial feeding; Smoking cessation; Nutrition, exercise and family health; Antenatal screening; Neonatal screening; Drug administration; Record keeping. User Involvement in Assessment ;Seven steps to Patient safety; Protection of the vulnerable including children; Raising and escalating concerns. Moving and Handling; Effective midwifery practice in antenatal and postnatal care (NMC 2009); NMC essential midwifery skills clusters included in those required at the first progression point (NMC 2009); Complete EC requirements in clinical portfolio (Directive 2005/36/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council 2005)
