Foundations in Clinical Practice

Module Aims        

To provide students with the opportunity to apply the foundations of clinical practice by developing:
-           The knowledge and ability to solve complex problems and justify their decisions
-           Techniques for critical appraisal of published medical literature relating to therapeutic problems encountered in practice
-           The confidence and ability to communicate effectively with patients and healthcare professionals. 
-           The ability to reflect on their practice to inform and plan their professional development.

Outline Syllabus   

The role of reflection (both in & on action) in personal & professional development; Patient monitoring - incl. biochemical tests: urea & electrolytes, renal function, liver function, haematology, microbiological monitoring; Individualising drug therapy using relevant information, incl. age, liver or renal disease or other co-morbidities; Interpretation of serum drug concentrations & individualisation of drug therapy. Pharmaceutical care of patients with conditions incl.: respiratory disease (Asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease & infections), cardiac disease (heart failure, angina/Non-STEMI/STEMI & atrial fibrillation) coagulation disorders & infections. Pharmaceutical care of patients requiring nutritional support, pain control, medicines reconciliation, support with adherence. Assimilation and appraisal of literature to answer therapeutic problems. Patient choice & responsible professionalism.

360 degree assessment
Patient profiles (min 3)
CPD entries (min 9)
Record on In-Training Assessment (RITA) & FPF assessment (minimum 3 (baseline + 2))
