International Environmental Governance

Module code: PES7042-B

Module Aims

Outline Syllabus

The module begins with a review of the historical development of international co-operation, agreements and institutions to address transnational or global environmental problems. You will also receive an introduction to the application of key concepts, theories and analytical frameworks relevant to the theme of environmental governance.

The module then focusses on the politics, institutions, and systems for international environmental governance as they have developed since the early 2000s. This will include examination of the way regional and international governance has operated in relation to a complex of overlapping norms and programmes. The module also develops frameworks for understanding and assessing the implementation, and effectiveness of GEG as well as the priorities for its further development. This section of the module will include an examination of the notion of ‘regime clusters’ and ‘architectures’ for environmental governance.

You then explore and examine these issues further through a number of case studies, including climate change and oceans governance, and further selected specific cases. For these cases, contemporary policy debates are examined.
