The Assessment and Management of Binocular Vision

Module Aims       

To develop an understanding of the normal and abnormal development of binocular vision and to enable students to apply this understanding in the clinical evaluation and management of patients with binocular vision dysfunction.

Outline Syllabus   

Spatial localisation and stereoscopic vision.   Clinical assessment of stereopsis.   The identification and measurement of ocular deviations using objective and subjective methods.  Evaluation of the motor control of ocular deviations.   Measurement of vergence.   Fixation disparity.   Mallett units.   The near vision complex and AC/A ratio.    Sensory adaptations to strabismus.   The classification and management of concomitant ocular deviations.   Characteristics and investigation of incomitant strabismus and its optometric management.   Introduction to nystagmus and neuro-opthalmology.   Development of binocular vision and the consequences of its abnormal development.   Amblyopia.   Paediatric optometry: managing the child patient; children's tests.

The clinical portfolio is a completed portfolio of evidence of clinical experience and skills, to include competence in practical techniques and interpretation of results.   Although this element does not contribute to the final mark for this module, this element must be passed.
