To stimulate an understanding of the fundamental principles of simple and complex lens types and knowledge of their performance.  To enable students to analyse their suitability in a variety of situations.

Lens form.  Surface power.  Transposition.  Toric lenses.  Focimeter.  Ophthalmic prisms.  Prismatic effect of ophthalmic lenses.  Spectacle frame description.  Frame and facial measurements.  Spectacle lens material.  Lens surfacing.  Lens aberrations.  Bifocal, trifocal and multifocal lenses.  Thick lens theory as applied to moderate to high power prescriptions.  Best form lens theory.  Near vision effectivity in spherical and astigmatic prescriptions.  Trial case lenses.  Aspheric lenses.  Tints and coatings.  Frame materials.
