Debridement of Wounds

Module Aims

To build upon existing wound management education and practice to develop (1) a critical understanding of the role of debridement, including conservative sharp debridement, as a method for removing dead tissue, cell debris or foreign bodies from wounds, and (2) the skills required to undertake safe debridement practice.

Outline Syllabus

Anatomy and physiology of the skin, lower body and related physiology associated with wound healing giving consideration to clinical effectiveness. 
Techniques associated with wound debridement.
Simulated clinical skills sessions. 
Case analyses drawn from health care settings/caseload of practitioners involved in sharp wound debridement including functional physiology and pathologies and care management.
Ethical and Legal and professional aspects of extending roles. 
Protocols and procedures and the auditing of practice.
Multidisciplinary Team working.
Clinical governance and clinical effectiveness. 
Critical reading skills. 
Work based learning: to include extended supervision of clinical practice associated with skill acquisition related to sharp debridement.
