Module Aims       

To develop knowledge and skills relating to the assessment and management of leg ulceration that can be applied to own specialist area of practice.  To manage the process of evidence based care for patients with leg ulceration.

Outline Syllabus   

Aetiology of leg ulcerations.
Epidemiology of leg ulcers.
Cost and social impact of leg ulcers.
Holistic approach to nursing assessment in regard to leg ulcer management.
The principle of Doppler and other aids to assessment - ultrasound angiography.
The principles of bandaging and the role of compression therapy.
Practical application of compression bandages.
Assessment and management of patients with chronic oedema/lymphoedema.
The role of primary and secondary health care teams in leg ulcer management.New innovations in leg ulcer management and benefits of using cost effectiveness models.
Clinical guidelines: national/local that underpin practice.
Determination of the effectiveness of interventions by clinical audit and research.
