Waste Management Law

Module Aims       

Waste management is a key factor in the prevention and control of environmental pollution, the laws of this area are therefore critically important in regard to sustainable development. Waste management law is a rapidly expanding field that is key to successful business management. This module will enable students to develop knowledge and understanding within the field of waste management and how the law fits into the international policies of environmental laws aimed at protecting the environment.

Outline Syllabus   

1. The movement and disposal of hazardous waste and the regulation of the cross-border movement of hazardous waste and international organisations.
2. The Basel Convention; Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) resolutions; General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) rules; and World Trade Organisation (WTO) rules.
3. The domestic and cross-border transport of special waste, waste producer responsibilities and liabilities, public laws on waste disposal and the 'polluter pays' principle. The laws governing waste disposal, penalties in the case of non-compliance and the contrast between common law and civil law systems, differences in approach between various countries in regard to waste determination and disposal standards
