Foundations of Law and Skills

Module Aims       

The aim of the module is part of the induction to the LLM pro-grammes of the School of Law, providing an introduction to the Eng-lish and International Legal Systems and the sources of Law, and key academic skills, including research and analytical skills.
The module is compulsory to all students joining the LLM pro-grammes and is particularly useful to you if you have not previously studied law or come from a non-common law background. The module will equip you with knowledge of sources and institutions of law, which is essential to allow you to successfully complete the LLM.
The module will offer you 20 hours of teaching during the induction week and week one of the LLM programme. At the end of the deliv-ery of the module you will be assessed on the module’s learning out-comes.
The module is not credit bearing but successful completion of it is a requirement to proceed on the LLM programme.

Outline Syllabus   

-           introduction to common law systems and to international law.
-           Sources of English law and of international law.
-           The structure of English courts.
-           Introduction to key international courts and their jurisdiction.
-           Essentials of legal analysis (legal research methods, critical evaluation, analysis of legislation and case law etc).
