Module Aims       

To introduce students to the organisation of the human body and its major systems, in order to distinguish between healthy and diseased states including their prevention and treatment in contemporary healthcare.

Outline Syllabus   

Organisation of the human body. Physiology of the cardiovascular system, respiratory system, endocrine system, brain and nervous system, digestive system, urinary system, immune system, skeletal system, including homeostasis. Selected chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, hypertension, thrombosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, diabetes, stroke, dementia, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, renal failure, cancer, hepatitis C, HIV/AIDS, osteoporosis, arthritis. Primary and secondary prevention of chronic diseases and management of long-term conditions, public health measures to promote wellbeing, lifestyle factors that lead to chronic illness and body dysfunction, healthy behaviours to maintain body function.
