Critical Perspectives on Dementia: a rights based approach

Module Aims       

To provide students with:
1. a critical appreciation of a human rights perspective for understanding the experience of people with dementia
2. a comprehensive understanding of the factors influencing the lived experience of dementia (sociological, psychological, biological)
3. the ability to independently implement a range of methods of facilitating interaction with people with dementia in order understand their experience and inform care practice.
4. Advanced understanding and application of social inclusion and citizenship theory to promote the rights of seldom heard voices in practice.

Outline Syllabus   

Principles of a human rights based approach to dementia care; reflective practice; and person-centred care. social exclusion vs social participation; citizenship, the rights of seldom-heard groups.
The impact of biological, psychological, social, cultural, environmental, and economic factors on the experience of dementia, including neuropsychological changes associated with different types of dementia; insight, awareness.
Culture, ethnicity and diversity and their implications for the lived experience of dementia.
Methods used to gain an understanding the experiences of people with dementia: traditional and non-traditional methods including interviews, observations, documentary analysis; Conversation analysis, elicitation methods and arts-based approaches.
How understanding of the experiences of people with dementia and those involved in their care can be used to inform practice and the importance of this understanding in the context of a global perspective.
