Applied and Diagnostic Pathology

Module Aims       

1. To provide an introduction to clinical pathology with an overview of disease classification and mechanisms of disease.
2. Understand of the role played by the histopathology services in the diagnosis of disease.
3. Develop an overview of how the diagnostic process contributes to the planning of appropriate treatment pathways for patients.

Outline Syllabus   

Introduction to clinical pathology; Classification and causes of disease; Disease Mechanism: response to injury, disorders of growth and differentiation, inflammation, immunopathology, carcinogenesis; Diagnostic Pathology - a biopsy's journey through a histopathology lab: specimen reception and cut-up, processing and staining and special techniques, microscopic examination and additional investigation, the multi-disciplinary team meeting, audit; Applied Pathology: e.g. breast pathology/ prostate pathology/neuromuscular pathology/neurodegenerative pathology; Role of histopathology lab in diagnostic process.

The Spot Test Mode of Assessment will be based on module content to include interpretation of pathological images and/or documentation followed by a short answer questions.

Assessment 001 cont./
Students will have an opportunity to read the report, annotate it and follow-up on its content in advance of the examination. During the examination students will be asked to answer 5 questions (out of 5).  Students will be permitted to bring an annotated report to the examination.
