Forensic Archaeology and Crime Scene Investigation

Module Aims       

This module builds upon the practical and theory presented in 'Introduction to Forensic Archaeology' and 'Crime Scene Investigation'.   To provide advanced skills in the application of archaeological principles and practice to simulated crime scenes.  To interpret and present this evidence in written and oral evidence to the court.

Outline Syllabus   

Archaeological excavation and recovery in a forensic context. Recording stratigraphy. The drawn record (measured records, plan drawing, section drawing, scales, symbols and conventions).  Total station survey (post-processing data using Leica Geo Office, single-survey using robotic total station and vision survey). Maps and GIS (using map assets, differential GPS, Viewshed analysis).  Airborne imagery (extant imagery, open access resources and archive data, Police National Air Support, Elevated masts, drones and kites).  Presentation for the courts - 3D laser scanning (types of laser scanner, spheres and other markers, registering scans, post-processing of data).  Visualising the crime scene.  The roles and responsibilities of the forensic archaeologist as expert witness in the criminal justice system.  Forensic archaeology and quality assurance procedures and regulation and Criminal Procedure Rules.  format and purpose of forensic strategy meetings.  The Bayesian approach in forensic science and writing expert reports and witness statements.  Mapping and manipulation of map assets.
