Module Aims       

The cornerstone of any scientifically based field discipline, be it archaeology or crime scene investigation, is based on observation of the material present, identification of what is significant and then the collection of field data/evidence, its analysis and presentation.  This module focuses on these key skills which are critical to any form of investigation.  This module will focus on how to identify evidence in the field, record it effectively and present it to a non-specialist audience in a clear and effective manner.

Outline Syllabus   

A basic introduction to geology & soils and their relationship to human activity in a landscape together with techniques which can be used effectively to investigate these, depending upon the focus of the study.  The use of maps as tools to obtain information on the geology, geomorphology, soils, & vegetation of a specific area.  Introduction to field/scene recording techniques - how to make field notes/how to make contemporaneous notes at a crime scene, sketches, plans, principles of photography.  Basic principles of survey - how to collect and plot data.  Introduction to geophysics - how data are collected in the field.  Presentation of data - report writing/witness statements.
