Module Aims        

The module provides a global perspective of the past and contemporary themes in world archaeology. The module places developments in British archaeology within the context of global trends, practice and archaeological knowledge. The module will develop knowledge and understanding of typologies, chronologies, theories and issues influencing archaeological practice around the world.

Outline Syllabus   

The module will involve an introduction to themes in world archaeology, the history of archaeology in different parts of the world (excluding Britain but noting that Britain is not isolated) including antiquarianism, colonialism and post-colonialism. Guest lectures (from within the School) on specific sites/areas will alternate with relativising summary lectures by the module leader. Example topics may include: antiquarianism, development of archaeology, professionalisation of archaeology, museum collection and heritage rights, climate change and archaeology, warfare and violence, industrial archaeology.
