This module aims to advance student knowledge and understanding of the features of quantitative and qualitative research, including ethical considerations, investigation, evaluation and analysis and to equip them with skillsto undertake a small primary research or work based project. It will enable them to understand and investigative theory including, research question, specification of investigative objectives, study design, data collection methods and analytical tools, as well as interpretation of primary data and dissemination of findings to wider health and social care groups.

Similarities & differences between competing orientations to research, their strengths and limitations
Selection of appropriate research methods & methodologies
Sampling, sampling error
Bias reduction strategies
Methods of data collection; questionnaire, interviews, focus groups, case studies, observation, content/discourse analysis
Revision of statistical tests. e.g. Chi square; Pearson correlation; Parametric and nonparametric tests
Research Governance & ethical approval processes
Data management (analysis, organisation, interpretation and presentation)
