So, why Bradford?

"I applied to the University of Bradford as I was attracted to its reputable Media School and facilities. I wanted to do a practical 'hands on' Film/TV degree - which Bradford promised (and fulfilled!). Before coming to Bradford I had never stepped foot in the North of England. I wanted to broaden my horizons and live and study somewhere new".

Wrestling?!

"My experience of studying at Bradford was excellent. I got access to high-end equipment such as Blackmagic Cinema Cameras, Steadicams and audio equipment. The facilities in the Live Broadcast truck gave me opportunities to work on BBC's Children in Need, Graduations, Varsity and even live Wrestling matches! During my degree I was accepted on a 1-year contract at Channel 5 Broadcasting as part of my placement year. This gave me a very useful insight into the TV industry and helped me garner the relevant experience to complete my final year".

Without the training opportunities I gained at Bradford I would not have the technical expertise I have now - such as camera operating, editing and working with actors.

Flying footage

"One of my favourite memories was working for Children in Need in The Piece Hall, Halifax. The day was spent rigging the cameras and helping the BBC. This was my first official drone job too. I was tasked with flying around The Piece Hall and capturing footage of the singers and crowds whilst ensuring it was safe and legal".

Being Social

"Activities Ball 2018 will always stick in my mind. The Students’ Union put this on to celebrate the achievements of society execs. I was President of Bradford Student Productions (film making society) which won a few awards. I also hosted a weekly show on the Bradford Student Radio Station (RAM Air) which was possibly the most transformative experience whilst I was at Bradford. This improved my confidence, radio presenting and public speaking skills. I hosted a debate show which enabled me to meet and interview a variety of interesting people".

Work Experience

"I got a 1-year contact at Channel 5 for my placement year. Prior to the interview I was asked to create a TV promo for a show and present my workings in a document. I put a lot of time and effort into this task as I knew that this would significantly improve my chances in getting the post. In my industry, it is important to create contacts and forge good working relationships. This can help with finding work in a competitive industry. I recommend grabbing any opportunity you are given whilst you’re at university - even if it’s unpaid. This will increase your contacts base which will prove very useful after you graduate. After finishing my degree, I took a fixed term contract in the Bradford Students’ Union Media Marketing Team. After this, I would like to pursue a job in Television or become a freelancer".
