Commercial Law

The LLM International Commercial Law course will provide you with a thorough grounding in the regulation of international commerce.

You’ll study core modules which cover the basic foundations of law and move on to learn about the key aspects of commercial law. You’ll also have a range of optional modules to choose from across the department. These include; Cyberlaw, Business, Human Rights and Environment, and Commercial Dispute Resolution.

Working as a Commercial Lawyer

Commercial lawyers provide businesses with advice on commercial agreements and transactions such as commercial contracts, mergers and acquisitions and corporate restructuring.

As a commercial lawyer, you could find yourself representing a portfolio of clients, as part of a law firm, or working in-house representing the interests of a specific organisation.

Environmental Law and Policy

The LLM Natural Resources and Environmental Law and Policy degree will give you an up-to-date understanding of environmental issues affecting societies across the globe, as well as the law and policies governing this area.

Your study programme will be made up of core modules which give you the necessary contextual background to environmental issues, as well as optional modules which allow you to discover prominent areas within environmental law, from climate change law and petroleum law, to natural resource governance and international environmental governance.

Environmental law work

Environmental Law covers diverse areas such as climate change, energy sources and corporate social responsibility, and there are opportunities across a range of organisations.

You could find work within a law firm, advising corporate clients on the environmental impacts of their activities. Outside of the legal sector, there are opportunities within government departments such as the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and charities.

Human Rights Law and Development

The Human Rights and Development postgraduate degree is carefully structured to provide students with an in-depth understanding of human rights in its multi-faceted form.

As part of the programme, you’ll also explore the ways in which human rights law can complement global development and help tackle international challenges such as war, terrorism and climate change.

Human rights law

Human rights law is focused on defending the rights and freedoms of people and organisations. And there are work opportunities across a variety of organisations, including law firms, private practice and even the government.  

One of the best things about human rights law is that it plays a role in various areas of legal work, from immigration to family law and commercial disputes. This means you’ll graduate with knowledge and skills that are transferrable to an incredibly diverse range of specialisms.

International Legal Studies

Our International Legal Studies degree will give you a comprehensive overview of law in a global context.  

You’ll explore the ways in which the law shapes different societies, guided by research and teaching from academics with expertise in various legal areas such as criminal, human rights, and banking and finance.

With a wide catalogue of School of Law modules to choose from, you’ll have the freedom to build a degree programme that aligns closely with your interests and careers aspirations.

International law careers

International legal studies is a diverse area and this is reflected in the potential job opportunities for graduate. Here are some of the roles you could consider:

  • International lawyer: A diverse field of law that is concerned with the rules that govern relations between different parties and nations.
  • Diplomat: Protecting and promoting the rights and interests of UK citizens and businesses across the world.
  • Legal advisor: Providing legal advice and guidance to a client.
  • Mediator: Helping resolve disputes between conflicting parties.

Our postgraduate law programmes are developed with input from the School of Law’s International Advisory Board, consisting of legal professionals, academics and third sector workers. This ensures that your course content will be relevant and closely aligned with the needs of the legal sector and wider societal organisations.  

In addition, you’ll benefit from the opportunity to engage in a range of extra-curricular activities, geared towards enhancing your employability. These include: advising the public on legal matters in the law clinic and mooting and mock trials overseen by legal professionals in our state-of-the-art Lady Hale Court.
