University combines professional training with degree course

The University of Bradford’s School of Pharmacy and Medical Sciences has been ranked highest in the country for student satisfaction in this year’s NSS (National Student Survey) results.

Satisfaction results from students resulted in a combined score of 97 per cent. The Pharmacy course was also top for: Teaching on my course and Learning opportunities and Learning community in the annual survey, which  is based on feedback from around half a million final year students between January and April.

Students at Bradford can choose to combine their degree and professional training - Bradford is the only university to offer this choice to home students. Places are still available during Clearing.

Head of School, Hadar Zaman, himself a consultant pharmacist who still practices one day a week, said: “We’re now the top performing school in the country for student satisfaction. Pharmacists are key NHS workers who perform vital work to use medicines safely, keep patients safe and advise doctors and other healthcare professionals. The Government is actively promoting our work as part of the primary healthcare team and in hospitals.

“The opportunities available and our high ranking are fantastic news for local students looking for future careers in health. Pharmacy offers learning opportunities, career pathways and the chance to serve your community. This result is also a testament and reflection of the hard work of our staff who go over and above to help support our students.”

He added: “Students at Bradford can choose to combine their degree and professional training. We are the only university to offer this choice to home and overseas students. Both routes to Pharmacy courses offer the same innovative and award-winning curriculum, which uses team-based learning. Either online or in class, learning is through discussion not listening quietly.”

Dr Sue Jones, Pharmacy programme leader, said: “I am delighted our students voted us so highly and the extra work my team put in, year-on-year, to listen to students and their concerns, together with making changes to teaching, learning and assessment, have made a difference. We teach using an educational approach called ‘Team-Based Learning’ throughout the programme, which is unique in the UK. All of my students will be working with patients throughout the programme and by putting them at the centre of our priorities means hopefully they will go out thinking of the difference they can make as key workers in the NHS.”

Bradford is ranked in the top 250 universities in the world for Pharmacy & Pharmacology in the 2019 QS World University Rankings by subject.

Entry to the profession of pharmacy is regulated by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC). Both our MPharm programmes were accredited for the maximum period of six years by the GPhC in 2018.

The University’s five-year Pharmacy programme, in the Faculty of Life Sciencs, has been running for over 45 years and enables students to undertake pre-registration training as part of the programme. This means they leave as qualified pharmacists. The five-year MPharm programme received 98 per cent overall satisfaction in the NSS 2020. The four-year programme, which requires a pre-registration period after graduation, received 96 per cent.

Given the recent Government announcement in relation to A levels we have places on the Pharmacy course available for well-qualified and enthusiastic students. Bradford graduates develop their knowledge and skills to make a difference and have impact in the world. We look forward to talking to you and showing you what we have to offer.
