University of Bradford ranked one of the greenest universities in the world

Published: Fri 15 Dec 2017

Universitas Indonesia (UI) has released the results of UI GreenMetric World University Ranking, with the University of Bradford scooping fourth place.

These results reinforce the progress Bradford has made in becoming a leading eco-campus and place the University as 2nd in the UK and 4th in the World.

Clive Wilson, Director of Estates and Facilities at the University of Bradford, said: “In the last 15 years we have transformed our urban city campus into a beacon of sustainable development. Our campus has 3 BREEAM outstanding buildings, the country’s first Passivhaus Science Building, high-efficiency refurbishments and green oasises for quiet contemplation surrounded by edible plants, fruits and vegetables. Our students learn about how to live a sustainable life through their courses, residences and interaction with our campus. Our utility budget is lower than it was in 2005, over £11m, and we have reduced our carbon emissions by 53%.

“Pitted against an increasing number of entries, fourth place in the world justifies all the hard work the team has put into this achievement and will energise us further to continue making improvements.”

619 universities in 76 countries participated in the rankings, compared to last year where 515 universities in 75 countries participated. It is the first and only university rankings in the world that measures each participating university’s commitment in developing an ‘environmentally friendly’ infrastructure. The rankings look at six indicators of each university (setting and infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste, water, transportation and education).

This year UI GreenMetric initiated a network hub for participating universities to share their best practices in implementing sustainable campus programs in their universities and collaborating together in three thematic priorities (Shaping Global Higher Education and Research in Sustainability; Creating Global Sustainability Leaders; and Partnering on Solutions to Sustainability Challenges).
