University of Bradford student, Labonya Siddiqui, celebrates receiving Fusion Award
A University of Bradford student is the recipient of this year's Fusion Education Award.
The Fusion Education Achievement Award is presented to a student who has been determined to succeed despite barriers; it also looks to reward people who are an inspiration to others in their community.
This year the winner of the Education Achievement award is Labonya Siddiqui, who studies Chemistry at the University of Bradford.
Labonya suffered 40 per cent burns after a kerosene lantern exploded in her face, engulfing her whole body with flames when she was eight.
She has since grown up to inspire her own community and those around her by going on to realise her dreams of becoming a model and more importantly studying at university.
Speaking on the night Labonya said, “I am really honoured to win this award.
“I think it is important that young people take advantage of the education opportunities they have. Many people in poor countries do not have these opportunities.
“When I lived in Bangladesh I badly wanted to go to school but could not. When I came here it was difficult to settle in as I had missed three years of schooling.”
This unique event has been supported by local and national organisations over the past seven years and continues to break new ground. The event supports members of all communities through their endeavours in youth leadership, entrepreneurship, volunteering, charity work, public service and sport.
Fusion 2013 is supported by the Asian Image newspaper and took place on Saturday June 1 in the Premier Suite, Ewood Park, the home of Blackburn Rovers.
