The University of Bradford will host the launch of the Centre of Excellence for Environmental Technologies at the new Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) Centre, on Wednesday 11 December, 1pm - 2.30pm.

The Deputy Lord Mayor, Councillor Joanne Dodds, will attend the launch event, which celebrates an innovative 14-19 education collaboration between Bradford Council, Buttershaw Business and Enterprise College and the University of Bradford. Business partners from Yorkshire Water, N G Bailey, Cummings, AWM and British Gas and senior representatives from Buttershaw Business Enterprise College and University of Bradford will also be present.

Dr Nazira Karodia, Director of STEM at the University of Bradford said “Working in partnership ensures the best resources, facilities and opportunities are brought together to ensure the success of the Ce:et. The University’s STEM Centre is purpose built to raise attainment in STEM subjects and is therefore very proud to be partnering in this initiative.”

Councillor Joanne Dodds, Deputy Lord Mayor of Bradford, said: “I’m very proud to launch this exciting and innovative partnership initiative. It brings together local businesses and education providers in the district who are committed to providing our young people with relevant skills for the future.”  

Councillor Ralph Berry, Executive Member for Children’s Services, added: “The Industrial Centres of Excellence we are developing across the Bradford District are focussing on sectors that are key to our future prosperity and are an important part of our Get Bradford Working programme. Everyone involved has a collective ambition to build a highly-skilled young workforce which will attract more companies and investment into the area.”

The event will see all attending signing up to the partnership agreement and officially launching the initiative. On the day, a “Supergrid Challenge” will be taking place in the STEM Centre, with pupils from Buttershaw Business Enterprise College competing in a challenge to create and sell energy generated from Lego constructed wind turbines. Supergrid is a highly competitive simulation of the green energy industry, testing pupils Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths skills in a fast paced, fun and interactive environment.
