University wins first place award for green excellence

13 November 13

The University of Bradford's sustainability efforts have once again been praised, achieving a first place award at last night's Green Gown Awards (12 November 2013).

This latest accolade celebrates the success of the GLEE project; the University’s latest Student Experience enhancement project, which has not only radically improved the old learning environment of the City Campus Library but also, provided a low carbon refurbishment at the same time.

The award recognises facility and service excellence and sustainability across the institution, specifically the GLEE initiatives ‘win-win’ benefits for both sustainability and performance; which enhances student experience and improves provision.

The University of Bradford’s Environmental Manager, Ben Tongue, collected the prize for the Facilities and Services category. He said: “Winning this Award confirms our belief that this is an excellent case study for the sector. The scope is huge with many buildings ripe for this type of refurbishment and improvements.”

Director of Estates and Facilities, Mr Clive Wilson was also nominated for the Sustainability Champion award for his great work driving long term sustainability success within the department.

Hosting the event, Professor Iain Stewart MBE, summarised the significance of the Awards stating: “Sustainability is one of those ideas that means something different to everyone. And yet we all have a clear notion of what is ‘unsustainable’. The Green Gown Awards are about celebrating a shift in thinking within the university and college sector to embrace and support those that are really pushing ahead with meaningful ways of making a future that works for all.

“The Green Gown Awards are an inspiration, not only to the education sector, but to all organisations, showing documented evidence that by working together, a huge impact can be achieved.”
