29 October 13
The British obsession with baking will go international as University of Bradford students compete to impress judges with their home dishes on Friday the 15 November.
Whether it is a Moroccan tagine, an Indian curry, French croissant or even a well risen Yorkshire pudding, students are invited to bake and cook bite sized portions of their favourite national dish to become ‘Team Bradford International Cook Off’ champion.
A panel of hand-picked judges including: a Chef from University caterers, Sodexo; Director of International Development, William Mitchell, and a member of the University’s Student Union will taste the student’s entries.
The event celebrates the importance of international students and the influence that they have by bringing together staff and students. This September the University has welcomed 1151 students from 102 countries. An impressive 15% of the University’s total population is international, with over 130 different nationalities speaking 70 different languages.
The University prides itself on the level of support and assistance offered to international students; an airport pick up service is available, a devoted team of support staff are on hand to help students settle in to their new surroundings as well as a 24 hour helpline. The Language Study Centre is a space dedicated to celebrating diversity; providing TV from around the world, learning resources and a place for overseas students to hang out together.
Director of International Development, William Mitchell, said, “International students contribute so much to the academic achievement of our university and to the local economy, but perhaps most important is the diversity of cultures and thinking they bring – food being one of the best know of these.”
Staff and students are invited to join our international students at Student Central to try cuisine from around the world between 12 and 2pm on Friday 15 November.
Students interested in entering The 'Team Bradford International Cook Off' should contact Hannah Ward in the Events Team by Tuesday 12 November by e-mailing their name, school, nationality and the name of the dish they wish to enter to: firstname.lastname@example.org.
