Theatre in the Mill celebrate recognition from Arts Council England

31 March 11

Arts on Campus at the University of Bradford are delighted to announce that Theatre in the Mill has been awarded a 95% increase in its funding from Arts Council England from 2012 to 2015 as part of the new National Portfolio funding scheme.

The award, worth 75.5% after inflation, comes in the face of £118 million pound cuts to the Arts Council England as part of the Comprehensive Spending Review and forms part of a significant restructure in arts funding across England.

A total of 1333 applications were made nationally to the Arts Council England National Portfolio funding stream, of which 695 were successful.

Head of Arts at the University of Bradford, Iain Bloomfield, said: "We are absolutely delighted with this award and proud to have been recognised by Arts Council England for our 'strong support for emerging artists, engagement with local communities and our innovative programme'. The staff team at Theatre in the Mill, and indeed across Arts on Campus, alongside our partner artists and collaborators have been working extremely hard to create a unique arts service for the University and the city of Bradford as a whole.  I am very glad that this award of funding for the next three years will allow us to develop that provision further. We would also like to offer our thanks to the University of Bradford, that we have been able to do this work for over forty years at a University that has no arts faculty.  This is quite remarkable and stands as a testament to its vision."

Whilst Theatre in the Mill benefited greatly from the funding allocation, there were unfortunately other companies that had bad news yesterday.  Iain went on to say: "It would be remiss of me if I did not say how sorry we at Theatre in the Mill are that many esteemed colleagues in the theatre-world have not had such happy news as an outcome of the review.  Our thoughts are with them and we are determined to help out as much as we can to ensure that we have a diverse and vibrant theatre scene in this city and region."

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mark Cleary, said: "With no arts faculty at the University, I am very proud that we have three fantastic art venues on campus that produce work of such high standard.  These venues add great value to the diverse student experience that the University offers.  Theatre in the Mill deserves to be recognised by Arts Council England for its work with emerging artists and its dedicated commitment with the local community."
