Job swap for University Vice-Chancellor and Sabbatical Officer
22 September 10
The Academic Affairs Sabbatical Officer will take charge of the University on Monday 27 September whilst the Vice-Chancellor goes back to his own student roots by working in Student Central.
The job-swap takes place to mark the opening of Student Central. Mateusz will spend the afternoon in the Vice-Chancellor’s office looking over design ideas for publications representing the University and in meetings that the Vice-Chancellor may have represented. The Vice-Chancellor will spend time in Student Central working in the retail and catering areas, students’ union reception and in the library.
Student Central has opened in time for the new academic year and provides an attractive, modern and interactive space fit for all the Students’ Union facilities. The building has a new glazed roof over the central courtyard to create an additional 1,000m2 of internal space and a glazed link to the J B Priestley library building.
The ‘learning atrium’ provides a flexible space to house a mixture of new and exciting student-led activities ranging from individual or group study and informal learning to exhibitions, internet surfing, socialising, or even maybe exercise on Wii Fit!
The Students’ Union services arranged around the atrium will be open, accessible space which will be an open link to the new shop and health bar.
New seminar/teaching rooms will open onto a freely accessible quiet innovative study area overlooking the atrium; a range of student support services will have direct easy access from this space.
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mark Cleary said: “I’m looking forward to working in the new Student Central for the afternoon. It will be a great opportunity to see students using Student Central first-hand. As a student I used to work in a bar and it’ll be a real experience revisiting that job and I wish Mateusz the best of luck taking on my role for the afternoon.”
