The University of Bradford has climbed three places in a national league of environmentally friendly universities to seventh place - making it the greenest university in Yorkshire.
The 2010 ‘People & Planet Green League’ shows the University of Bradford rising from 10th place in 2009, and 31st in 2008. The League is a benchmark for how sustainable higher education institutions are, and covers areas such as ethical investment, carbon emissions, and waste management.
The announcement comes during Universities Week, a national campaign supported by over 100 institutions to highlight the positive impact universities have on society, culture, the environment and the economy.
The University’s performance has benefited from the establishment of an initiative called ‘Ecoversity’, which was set up to embed sustainability into the heart of the institution.
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mark Cleary, said: “We are extremely pleased to have moved up the Green League and to be the most sustainable university in Yorkshire. This is a major achievement for us and represents a lot of hard work and ongoing commitment from our students, staff, partners and suppliers. I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who has given their support.
“Reducing our impact on the environment and leading the way in creating sustainable solutions for the future is something we are incredibly passionate about. With exciting developments on the horizon, such as the unique Sustainable Student Village which will be completed in 2011, and new approaches to power sources, I am confident we can continue to rise even higher up the League next year.
The Green League measures both management and performance around environmental issues. The University of Bradford scored full marks in the fields of environmental policy, sustainable procurement/fair-trade, staff and student engagement and waste management.
