Muslims Institute Launch At House Of Lords
31 March 10
A Bradford based network, set up to develop leadership capacity amongst professional Muslims, is being launched at a prestigious event at the House of Lords on Friday 26 March. The Professional Muslim Institute (PMI) will host some of the most influential Muslims and will be joined by top lawyers, bankers, politicians, Peers, politicians and other successful role models from the business and professional world.
The PMI was set up in partnership with University of Bradford in a response to disadvantages and issues in the district, such as community cohesion, socio-economical disadvantages, underachievement and housing deprivation.
Javed Bashir, Director of PMI, said: "These disadvantages can lead to alienation, social exclusion and, in certain cases, may even lead to extremism, particularly among young people. Therefore, action was needed to develop strategies to change this.
"There is a lack of meaningful and effective leadership in the district, and around the country, within the Muslim community. Effective leaders have a strategic ability to know what needs doing, understand the people and organisational processes that will get things done, and follow ethical and social justice principles to achieve their objectives."
Nadira Mirza, President of the PMI and Dean of the School of Lifelong Education and Development at the University of Bradford, said: "Knowing oneself and others forms a critical part of this process as well as the ability to reach out and connect with the young people and relevant stakeholders. Having good leadership is critical to the success of the Muslim community and the University will help them to develop their skill and capacity across Muslim communities in Bradford, around the country, and hopefully in Europe.
"The PMI wants to develop the type of leaders that will enable the Muslim community in Britain to develop strategies to contribute fully for the common good of both the Muslim and wider society. The University is providing support and leadership programmes to aid the integration of community leaders."
The PMI requires participants to fully and actively engage in the process of learning. The University of Bradford is offering PMI members a Diploma in Leadership and Management, accredited by the Institute of Leadership and Management, to explore assumptions, beliefs and attitudes about themselves, the organisations in which they work, the environments in which they operate, and the wider British society.
PMI members will provide mentoring and coaching to young people in a bid to inspire young people to contribute positively to British society and to tackle extremism.
The launch is hosted and supported by Professor Baroness Afshar, OBE. Ac SS. She said: "I am pleased to support the work of the Professional Muslims Institute. We need to develop links, understanding, build self-confidence, and support systems to enable us to participate fully in the British society and to give our best to the society we live in."
