University of Bradford hosts world powerlifting championships
10 September 09
The University of Bradford will be hosting the World Single Event Powerlifting Championships from Friday 11th to the Sunday 13th September 2009.
You are invited to send a photographer/reporter to the Atrium on Friday 11th September at 12pm onwards where Patricia Kim and Gabrielle Bennett will be available for photographs and interviews. Both Patricia and Gabrielle who are students at the University of Bradford are aiming to defend their current World Champion titles.
Around 250 lifters from around the world will compete in a series of squat, bench press and deadlifts.
The Team of England will have to defend various World Champion titles from last year including deadlift and bench press and will all be aiming to break British or World Records. It is expected the atmosphere will be both action-packed and exciting.
The World Drug Free Powerlifting Federation (WDFPF) was created in 1988 specifically as a drug-free alternative international platform - in order to provide fair competition world-wide for those powerlifters who wish to train and compete without performance-enhancing drugs.
Patricia Kim, who is a student at the University said: "I am very excited and proud for the World Championships to be held at the University of Bradford where I work and train. I am extremely nervous but hope to do the city proud and break my own British Deadlift record. I hope that these championships will encourage more people, especially women, to get involved in powerlifting. It is a great sport which takes a lot of hard work and determination but at the same time is fun and gives you a chance to be part of a very supportive community."
Members of the public are invited to come along and watch the events over the three days. Event timings are: Friday 12pm - 4pm, Saturday 9am-5pm and Sunday 9am - 4pm.
