Graduate Wins £2,500 to Jumpstart Business Idea

A University of Bradford graduate has won £2,500 to take his unique commuter micro-car business idea further.

Think Business@Bradford, the University's business start up support programme, runs an annual business competition encouraging students and graduates to enter a business idea. This year, £2,500 was on offer to the winner to turn their business into a reality.
 
The £2,500 prize was awarded to Richard Serrant with his prototype micro-car. Richard graduated from the University, with a degree in Biomedical Sciences, in 2007. Richard impressed the judges with a life sized 'cardboard tube' model of his micro-car; a well researched business plan and his huge enthusiasm and vision for his business. He plans to use the £2,500 prize to develop, produce and test his prototype.

Two other ideas were also given discretionary prizes of £500.  Archaeology Master's student Tom Frankland, was awarded the prize for setting up ArchaeoFX, a system which produces professional 3D reconstructions of historical material, offering an innovative way for archaeologists and museums to present their excavations and artefacts to the public.  The other prize was awarded to Archaeology PhD student Hannah Russ and Archaeology Master's graduate David Griffiths who have set up 'Archaeology in Action'  which runs archaeological events, workshops and classes for schools, museums and interest groups.

Incubation Manager at Think Business@Bradford, Teresa Hull, said: "All three winners are now part of the Think Business support programme and will receive 12 months support to start up and develop their businesses.

"Judges were also amazed by other student and graduate ideas which included: events to get Bradford on the map, professional translation services, creative design, archaeology, 3D animation, Bollywood pianist, regeneration consultancy, international student support, a micro-car, and archery instruction."
