How to survive Clearing
13 August 09
Next week thousands of students across England and Wales will be receiving their A level results (Thursday 20 August 2009) which means thousands of students in the UK will soon be going through the Clearing process to secure a place in higher education.
Clearing is the time when students can apply for courses at universities and colleges because they have either not achieved the grades they were expecting, they have overachieved on their expected grades, or they have made a last minute decision to enter higher education.
Should you enter Clearing, the advice from Jennie Coates, Head of Admissions at the University of Bradford is..."Stay calm, don't panic and get organised."
Jennie says: "A-level results day and Clearing can be a daunting time, especially if you've suffered a disappointment with grades. Ringing up universities for a place through Clearing might be the last thing you feel like doing.
"It's important to stay calm. Thousands of other students in the UK will be in the same position and universities deal with the process of Clearing every year. There are, however, a number of things students can do to help themselves.
"Firstly, make sure that you are available to receive your results on Results Day.
"Secondly, ensure that you are familiar with Clearing practices and procedures. This information is available from UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service). www.ucas.com
"Start planning ahead now - unless you are very confident that you will obtain the results you need for your firm or insurance choice offer."
