The University of Bradford's Ecoversity project has achieved two major awards at the prestigious Higher Education Green Gown Awards ceremony.
The Green Gown Awards, held at Imperial College, London, on Thursday 25 June 2009, recognised exceptional environmental and sustainability initiatives. They are considered the leading award scheme in the sector.
The University's Ecoversity project competed with over 170 applications from more than 100 universities and colleges to win the 'Institutional Change' category for its 'Beyond Greening' initiative. Ecoversity was also awarded 'Highly Commended' in the 'Curriculum' category, for its institutional education for sustainable development project. This initiative aims to embed sustainable development in the learning and living experience of all students. The Ecoversity project was also short-listed for the two further categories, 'Student Initiatives', and 'Greening ICT'.
During the awards ceremony, the Green Gown judges said: "Ecoversity is an ambitious project which demonstrates how, with the right strategy and commitment change, sustainability can be achieved across an entire university.
"The application demonstrated strong senior management support, student engagement and academic commitment across all subject areas."
Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Professor Geoff Layer, said: "It is fantastic that the entire University community has been recognised for our whole institutional programmes which have required massive commitment and inputs from staff and students over the last five years.
"We've made huge progress in this time and this award will give the University renewed enthusiasm and encouragement to push on faster and further with our plans. We are in the process of developing more ambitious policies for areas such as carbon and energy to show leadership in the sector."
Vice Chancellor, Professor Mark Cleary, said: "Sustainable Development is now becoming part of the mind-set and culture of the University. We were delighted with the results of the Green Gown Awards and with the recent rise to 10th in the People and Planet Green League table. We hope through our Ecoversity achievements to inspire other Universities to adopt similar bold approaches."
