Celebrating the success of over 100 businesses

7 May 09

Think Business@Bradford, the business support programme at the University of Bradford, celebrated its fifth year of helping get businesses off the ground this week.

The celebration event gave businesses a chance to celebrate their creativity and achievements by voicing their experiences and accomplishments.

During the celebration attendees heard from one of Think Business@Bradford's first businesses, Brian Harte Photography.

Brian studied optometry at the University but after two-and-a-half years of study soon realised he wanted to spend the rest of his life working with different kind of lenses. Brian left his studies to follow his passion in photography, which he says was made possible by Think Business.

He said: "Think Business is a great scheme as it helped me develop a business plan and gave me 12 months to get up to speed and learn about what a lucrative business required.  The hands on advice I received helped me focus on putting all my energy into the success of my business."

Guests then heard from Archaeology PhD student Hannah Russ and Archaeology MA graduate David Griffiths - who with their company 'Archaeology in Action' were Think Business, 100th business - a great milestone.

'Archaeology in Action' runs archaeological events, workshops and classes for schools, museums and interest groups and gives children an insight into archaeology in their area.

Hannah said: "Think Business made us focus on our ideas and what would be profitable.  We have been helped in so many ways including a £1000 grant for marketing purposes. With this, we have managed to create marketing materials which we are giving to over 170 schools and eight museums. This will hopefully extend our client profile. Without Think Business we would have likely would have drifted for an extra year without fully putting our ideas into practice."

Guests also listened to Siobhan Lees, author of 'The brighter marketing bible for small businesses' and director of Brighter Marketing. Siobhan is a regular mentor on the Think Business programme and has worked with many of the graduate businesses developing a marketing strategy that works for them.

Incubation Manager at Think Business@Bradford, Teresa Hull, said: "This week's celebration event was to mark the anniversary of 5 years, and to celebrate the 100 businesses that have passed through the doors of Think Business. We've really enjoyed celebrating the latest successes with the businesses and were delighted so many of our University and regional support partners could join us."
