Green Travel week takes staff and students on eco journey

2 October 09

The University of Bradford is hosting its annual Green Travel Week this month to raise awareness of ways to travel more sustainably and to launch three new eco friendly services.

The week will see staff and students being encouraged to ditch their cars in favour of eco friendly options. There will also be a chance to win Prizes of up to £200 by entering the travel survey and signing up for the Bradford CarShare Lift Finder network.

The launch of the new services will highlight the innovative initiatives available for staff and students and City Car Club will be displaying one of their three cars which will be available for staff and students of the University and Bradford College for short bookings and journeys to encourage people to leave their cars at home. Cars can be rented by the hour for under a £5, with 50 miles included in each booking. Other staff and student initiatives being launched are the First Bus Tax Buster Tickets, which allow users to save around a third on annual bus tickets and the Interest Free Loans on Annual Northern Rail Tickets, which enables people to get 2 months free and pay in easy monthly instalments.

This event is part of the University's Ecoversity programme, which aims to embed the principles and practices of sustainable development across the entire institution by getting staff and students involved and making it easier for them to adopt it into their behaviours and lifestyle.

University Travel Planner, Ben Tongue, said: "Green Travel is a main priority of Ecoversity. Changing the way we travel to work or study will have many benefits such as lowering carbon footprint, increasing fitness and saving money. Launching these schemes gives our staff and students even more flexibility when deciding how to travel. The aims of the week are to promote all the different kinds of transport that are available to people and to make sure staff and students have a good awareness of how to get to the University's campuses by public transport - not forgetting to have some fun on the way!"

City Car Club Commercial Manager, Keith Kelly, said: "City Car Club is delighted to be launching its partnership with the University and Bradford College.  The arrival of the first three City Cars will help both institutions save money and reduce emissions and provides a springboard for further investment by City Car Club in Bradford more generally".
