Leading medical scientist visits Bradford to give 'straight talking' lecture
2 October 09
Internationally renowned scientist, Professor Edzard Ernst will visit Bradford on the Thursday, 8 October, 2009 to give a thought provoking lecture at the University of Bradford.
Designed to stimulate discussion and question taken-for-granted views, the lecture 'Complementary/Alternative Medicine: Trick or Treatment?' is open to everyone and is expected to be controversial and possibly unorthodox.
During the lecture Professor Ernst will be exploring the themes of his recent book co-authored with Simon Singh and concerning what is effective and what is not in alternative medicine. Famous for his application of scientific rigour to the complementary medicine fields, he has received criticism from those complementary and alternative practitioners.
His work has been awarded with 13 scientific prizes and accolades and two Visiting Professorships. He served on the Medicines Commission of the British Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency and on the Scientific Committee on Herbal Medicinal Products of the Irish Medicines Board.
Dr George Sheeran, of the School of Lifelong Education and Development, who helped organise the series said, "We are delighted that the UK's first professor of complementary medicine should be visiting Bradford to speak at the University and open his discussion to everyone in the Bradford district."
Other speakers visiting the University this year include Frank Furedi, Professor of Sociology at the University of Kent, who will be speaking on Tuesday 17 November, 2009, along with well-known writer and broadcaster Mona Siddiqui Professor of Islamic Studies and Public Understanding at the University of Glasgow, who will be speaking in April, 2010 on Islam and Citizenship.
