Malang Jarju
Academic Background: Malang has a Higher Teachers certificate from The Gambia College, a degree in Law from the University of The Gambia and Bar Vocational Certificate from The Gambia Law School to practice law as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of The Gambia.
Malang Jarju is from The Gambia and is experienced in policing, conflict resolution and peace-building. He has worked with the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education as a Teacher/Social Worker and has a record of handling social issues and community matters.
As a lawyer, Malang was responsible for identifying and mentoring new potential police prosecutors. He also facilitated and coordinated the training of female police prosecutors who are among the most diligent prosecutors in The Gambia Police Force (GPF). He experienced leading a team that developed and facilitated the training of a vast number of police officers on basic law, conflict resolution and peace building activities within The Gambia. He has been entrusted with the responsibility of building trust and confidence between the police and communities.
Malang has served as a Peacekeeper with United Nations-African Union Hybrid Mission in Darfur (UNAMID), Sudan, where he served as the Head of the UNAMID Police Best Practices Unit. He was also responsible for conducting research on best practices in peace building initiatives that were implemented with success in other United Nations Missions. He facilitated information between police management and relevant stakeholders in the project.
He is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Peace, Conflict and Development at the University of Bradford. Malang has chosen to pursue the Rotary Peace Fellowship because he wants to broaden his knowledge in the area of peace-building, conflict resolution and gender in order to promote a culture of global peace, human rights and security.
