Flávia Salazar Sousa

Academic Background: Bachelor of Laws – Federal University of Pernambuco; and Bachelor of Arts in International Relations – Estácio do Recife College.

Areas of Interest: Women, Peace & Security, Conflict Resolution, Alternative Dispute Resolution, Humanitarian Assistance, Humanitarian Protection, Project Management and Risk Analysis.

Flávia has four years of experience working as a Political Officer at the British Embassy in Brasilia, providing analysis and advice on the United Kingdom’s international security and development priorities for Brazil. As the Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s focal point on matters related to peacekeeping, Flavia worked in collaboration with the Brazilian Government, civil society and academia to advance the Women, Peace & Security agenda in Brazil.

Flavia also informed the UK’s approach to the humanitarian crisis in Venezuela, working closely with other British Embassies in Latin America and with the UK’s Department for International Development (former DFID). She coordinated the international community’s engagement with international organisations in Brasilia and funded a number of local projects aimed at providing assistance to Venezuelan migrants and refugees.

Prior to her political role, Flavia acted for four years as the UK’s Pro-Consul for the North and Northeast of Brazil, providing consular assistance to British Nationals, including during the 2014 FIFA World Cup Games and the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. Flavia has also crisis preparation and response experience and is a qualified Trauma Risk Assessment practitioner by the FCO.
