International Masters Summer School 2023

12 - 16 June 2023

About our International Masters Summer School

We are very proud to organise and host an annual International Masters Summer School (IMSS).

IMSS brings together Masters-level students from our own, as well as partner and collaborative partner institutions, principally from across Europe and the Middle East/Gulf countries. Each year the programme for the Summer School is themed around emergent challenges and issues

Based at our award-winning 'Ecoversity' City Campus, Summer School participants engage in a stimulating week of talks and activities lead by academic and industry experts. Attending and engaging with IMSS gives students the opportunity to earn credits towards their Master's, receive certificates and enter prize competitions.

“The truth is: the natural world is changing. And we are totally dependent on that world. It provides our food, water and air. It is the most precious thing we have and we need to defend it.” SIR DAVID ATTENBOROUGH

Learn from the Experts

Each year, our IMSS programme invites leading academic and industry experts to our award-winning 'Ecoversity' City Campus.  The speakers for 2023 will be added shortly.

Grand Sustainability Challenges

During the week of IMSS 2023, we co-created and identified 10 Grand Sustainability Challenges which participants will undertake to investigate and propose solutions to - through group projects. The Grand Challenges were extrapolated using a combination of:

  • Expert round table workshops held with the keynote speakers of IMSS 2023
  • Key ideas that emerged from four days of group work discussions held by 200+ participants captured on Mentimeter
  • Seminal themes which were posed by expert speakers from organisations such as the UNDP, Green Climate Fund, WWF, and other sustainability experts from industries including food, farming, logistics, climate change, smart city and infrastructure, and health sectors.

The group projects will be undertaken by students during the period of July and August 2023 using a clearly defined set of criteria and templates. The groups will be invited to present their projects/solutions to an internal panel in September 2023 where the most impactful and feasible 10 solutions will be selected and mentored in preparation for presentation to an expert panel (consisting of Keynote Speakers at IMSS 2023 and others). The three best groups will then be selected and will be invited to represent the University of Bradford at COP28.

Schedule - What should you expect?

Throughout the Summer School each day has been assigned a theme. More information can be seen below with what attendees can expect for the week day by day and will be further updated with the schedule.

Day 1 will commence by giving participants the opportunity to learn about the economic, social, and environmental factors that are crucial for ensuring that future generations can enjoy the same resources and benefits as present ones. Nevertheless, achieving sustainability is not without its challenges and barriers, and it will take a collective effort from governments, businesses, and civil society to overcome them. To ensure a sustainable future for all, it is essential to address these challenges and barriers through collaboration and innovative thinking. This session will focus on various areas related to sustainability, and participants can expect to gain valuable insights and knowledge.

Day 2 focuses on allowing attendees to gain an understanding of the various local and global efforts to promote the circular economy concept. Unlike the conventional linear model of “take, make, dispose,” the circular economy model emphasizes the importance of reducing waste, prolonging the use of products and materials, and regenerating natural systems. It’s an all-encompassing approach that considers the entire life cycle of a product, from production to disposal. Specifically, this session will take a closer look at how the concept of circular economy has been implemented within the city of Bradford.

During the day participants will have the opportunity to go on a tour of the City of Bradford which will explore the implementation of circular economy in the City.

During day 3 attendees will gain real perspectives on sustainability through the “Lessons from Asia and Africa” series. Experts from diverse fields will share their experiences and insights on sustainability and development in these regions. The aim is to showcase successful and innovative solutions and practices that have addressed environmental challenges and promoted sustainability. By sharing these success stories, the series hopes to motivate and inspire individuals and organizations to take action towards sustainability in their own communities.

In addition, there will be “Sustainability Tours” that provide hands-on learning opportunities for participants to experience sustainable practices in action. These tours take participants to different locations and showcase sustainable initiatives. The goal is to educate and inspire participants to adopt sustainable practices in their own lives and work

Day 4 allows attendees to receive guidance on “A Roadmap to Recovery” and learn about steps and strategies for achieving a more sustainable future. The session will provide practical advice and resources to help individuals, organizations, and governments address environmental challenges and promote sustainable practices across various sectors such as energy, transportation, agriculture, and waste management. The roadmap aims to inspire action and encourage collaboration towards a more sustainable future.

Additionally, participants will have the opportunity to take part in the “SULITEST”, a sustainability literacy test that aims to raise awareness and promote sustainable practices. The test covers a wide range of sustainability topics, including climate change, biodiversity, and social equity. By taking the test, attendees can assess their understanding of sustainability and identify areas where they can improve. The goal is to promote sustainable behaviour and encourage individuals and organizations to take action towards sustainability.

Friday will focus on an assessment surgery for all students attending the IMSS as a credit-bearing module.
