Teaching and Supervisory Responsibilities

Gary has provided management courses on:

  • economics of UK housing
  • developments in financial services
  • introduction to economics
  • introduction to cluster-based economic development

Gary graduated with first-class honours in politics, philosophy and economics from Worcester College, Oxford, and completed a master's degree in economics at Warwick University before pursuing further research in the economics of resource depletion at Nuffield College, Oxford, under Professor Jim Mirrlees.

He then undertook a career in business, primarily with the Halifax Building Society (now HBOS plc), being responsible for its economic and statistical research and strategic planning and latterly for its corporate affairs activities. This work involved developing and commentating on the bank's respected index of UK house prices, and providing commentaries and lectures on, and analyses of, the economics of the UK housing market to academic and business audiences and to the wider public. It also involved detailed analysis of the financial service and housing markets and the provision of advice to the Halifax on its strategic positioning in these markets. He was appointed a visiting professor at Huddersfield University for his work on the development of retail financial services markets.

In recent years, Gary has moved from providing corporate strategic advice to the analysis of regional economies and advising on the policies needed to improve regional competitiveness. He has advised Yorkshire Forward, other regional development agencies and Department of Trade and Industry on cluster development, and worked with a number of academics and consultants throughout the world in developing thinking and policy on cluster-based economic development.
