LLM International Legal Studies

Iqra Arif
  • One of the first LLM International Legal Studies graduates at the University of Bradford
  • Has now secured a role in Banking and International Trade Law

Iqra had an LLB (Hons) degree, but felt she needed to expand her knowledge base in order to break into the highly competitive legal sector.

"When I found out Bradford School of Law was starting an LLM in 2015 I was very excited.  I was attracted to the programme because the modules cover all aspects of international law, ranging from Human Rights Law in Global Contexts to Global Finance Law and Global Questions in Legal Theory. Also, the Faculty of Management and Law has a good reputation throughout Yorkshire."

Research based learning

Iqra was part of the first student cohort on the one year LLM in International Legal Studies. The way the programme is assessed was a particular highlight for her.

"Students are only assessed by assignments - there are no exams. I learnt more from independent research than I would have through exam study. In exams, you only rely on books whereas with assignments you carry out research through a variety of material including Journals, articles etc. When you go through these different sources, you acquire a deeper knowledge."

Outstanding support

A major contributor to Iqra's success on the programme is the guidance she received from the academic team.

"It would not have been possible for me to achieve a Merit without the support and feedback from law tutors, especially my dissertation supervisor Helen Trouille.

Staff at the School of Law are very friendly and always there to support you. In each one of my assignments I have received so much feedback from law tutors. Feedback is a major part of the learning process - once you have feedback you know your weaknesses and you can tackle them. It helps you avoid making the same mistake again and again."

A bright future

Iqra graduated in December 2016, and has already secured a graduate role in the legal sector.

"I have been offered a job working as a trainee in Banking and International Trade Law in a Commercial Firm in Pakistan - evidence that the International Legal Studies programme at the University of Bradford is worth it! My hard work has paid off and I am ready to step into the Legal World."
