Abstract

This PhD is funded by the AHRC and is part of the Fragmented Heritage project, which seeks to improve the scale and quality of the analysis of fragmentary materials. This aspect of Fragmented Heritage involves research and experimentation on the use of imaging and analysis techniques to understand tool use, production, object modification and the differentiation between deliberate and post depositional damage.

Different approaches are used to quantify traces with a view to bring objective recording to this technique. Approaches considered are primarily based on 3D methods to digital recording including, but not restricted to, laser scanning, CT scanning and 3D microscopy techniques. This project is experimental but exemplary assemblage material may also be drawn from project sites in Spain, Jordan, Kenya and the UK as appropriate.
