Visiting Other Libraries
SCONUL Access Scheme
SCONUL is The Society of College, National and University Libraries and it represents university libraries in the UK and Ireland as well as national libraries. SCONUL Access is a reciprocal scheme which allows many university library users to borrow or use books and journals at other libraries which belong to the scheme.
The scheme offers:
- access to 170+ libraries (and growing);
- coverage of all parts of England Scotland Wales and, for the first time, Ireland;
- borrowing access for staff, researchers, taught postgraduates, part-time, distance learning (DL) and placement students;
- reference access for full-time undergraduates;
- no limit to the number of libraries a user can join;
- one simple procedure for joining.
Your rights at each library depend on which band you fall into:
- Band A: academic staff and research students;
- Band B: part time, distance learning and full time undergraduates who are on placement for more than 10 weeks;
- Band C: full time taught postgraduates;
- Band R: full time undergraduates.
You can find full details of this scheme, including the online membership application form, on the SCONUL Access website. Please check your library account for overdue books and outstanding fines before you apply. Your application will only be accepted if you are in good standing. Under the terms of SCONUL Access, you must clear all your fines before you can join, including fines of less than £5. Fines can be paid online using our UPay service. Users with a poor record of behaviour in the University of Bradford Libraries are likely to have their application rejected.
You will only need to complete the application form once even if you wish to visit several member libraries. You should see a list of libraries that you are eligible to visit once you have answered the first two questions on the form.
Please allow one working day for your application to be processed.
Use of WiFi and online resources
Please note that licensing requirements deter some universities offering visitors access to their network including the Internet, online journals, databases, email etc. If you wish to use any electronic resources, you should check the library's website or contact them in advance of your visit.
In libraries where eduroam is available you will be able to access the Internet from your laptop or mobile device. Please note that you will only gain access to the Internet and University of Bradford online resources via eduroam.
SCONUL Vacation Access scheme
