PhD theses

Use Summon to locate information about University of Bradford PhD theses. The Library holds theses in print and since 2009 theses may be viewed online via the Bradford Scholars repository.

Print copies of theses may only be consulted on Library premises and can be obtained via the library enquiry desk.

To find theses on Summon:

  1. Enter the author's surname and/or thesis title if known, or keywords into the Summon search box.
  2. Use the refining options on the left to refine the Content Type to Dissertation/Thesis.
  3. If wishing to view items available online only, use the refining option on the left to refine to Full Text Online.
  4. Follow the link to online full-text in Bradford Scholars for theses submitted in or after 2009.
  5. For print only theses note the author, title and year of the work you wish to consult if it was submitted before 2009.
  6. Go to the Library counter to request to see the print copy if the thesis was submitted before 2009.

Masters' dissertations

Masters' Dissertations submitted by University of Bradford students may be viewed online via the Masters' Dissertations repository. Access is only available to members of the University of Bradford. Off-campus users will need their University of Bradford username and password to access Masters' Dissertations.

Masters' dissertations can also be viewed by searching Summon and refining Content Type to Dissertation/Thesis as described above.

NB! The Library provides access to the latest five years' worth of Masters' dissertations.

Other theses

British universities' theses

The British Library's EThOS service provides full-text access to an ever growing number of digitised PhD theses from participating UK institutions. In order to download a thesis from EThOS, you will need to register for an account. If a UK thesis is not listed as available to download from EThOS, you can request it via the Inter-Library Loans service. The ILL service can request an item to be digitised and added to the EThOS repository provided the institution participates in the scheme.

International theses

The Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (NDLTD) provides a list of the Open Access theses repositories for 30+ countries as well as a global search. See the NDLTD webpage for a list of resources. Use the NDLTD search page to find theses and dissertations in the archive.

American theses and dissertations

For American theses and dissertations ProquestExpress provides a useful search engine. Use the search to identify work, and if they are available as Open Access locate the full-text using Google, Google Scholar or CORE.
If works are not available as Open Access, request through Inter-Library Loans.

Other useful resources for locating theses and dissertations

The CORE service is based on the Google Custom Search engine, which lets you search the contents of the repositories listed for freely available academic research information.

Many databases such as those provided by EBSCO and Proquest contain references and links to theses and dissertations. The databases will require you to login with your University of Bradford username and password. However, EBSCO also offer a free search engine called EBSCO Open Dissertations specifically for finding and retrieving theses and dissertations without the need to access the EBSCO database.

Library catalogues, in particular Library Hub Discover and WorldCat may provide additional references to dissertations and theses.
