Regulation 25

Sabbatical Leave for Officers of the University Union

INTERPRETATION

1 In these Regulations the word 'award' includes any allowances to which the students in receipt of the award is entitled under the terms of the award.

2 The word 'allowance' means the allowance which will be made available by the Union to cover the expenses of office as detailed in paragraph 9 below.

GENERAL

3 A sabbatical year may be granted by the Senate, on application through the Registrar and Secretary, to a student elected to the office of President, Deputy President, Communications Secretary, Treasurer of the Union, Women's Officer or President of the Athletic Association, the year to run from 1st August in one year to 31st July in the following year.

4 Subject to approval of the Senate, a student so applying for a sabbatical year shall be registered for that year as a student of the University.

5 No person shall hold sabbatical office or paid elected office in the Union for more than two years in total nor shall any person be given leave to suspend his or her course of study for more than one year to take up such office.

6 It shall normally be a condition of a student actually assuming a sabbatical office that he or she shall have satisfactorily completed the appropriate course work and examinations immediately preceding the sabbatical year.

7 During a sabbatical year a student shall continue his or her normal course of study in some form (for example, by project work or continuing studies subject to appropriate supervision) in consultation with the professor or tutor concerned. The form which the course of study takes shall be subject to the approval of the Senate.

8 Proposals in respect of the form of the course of study shall be submitted to the Registrar and Secretary in time for presentation to the Senate at the first appropriate meeting after the election of the student concerned.

9 A Student granted a sabbatical year as President, Deputy President, Communications Secretary, Treasurer of the Union, Women's Officer or President of the Athletic Association shall receive an award on the same scale as that approved by the Senate and the Council for University of Bradford Studentships, it being understood that in addition to the award an allowance will be made available by the Union to cover the expenses of office other than those out-of-pocket expenses for which claims can normally be submitted for reimbursement, such as for travelling and subsistence. The age qualifications stated in the Regulations for the award of University of Bradford Research Studentships concerning Dependants' Allowances shall not apply to the awards made to sabbatical officers of the Students' Union.

10 Any matter in dispute in respect of a sabbatical year shall be referred to the Joint Committee of the Senate and the Students' Union for its observations.

PRESIDENT OF THE UNION

11 The award made to the President of the Union for the period of his or her sabbatical year shall be met equally by the University and the Union.

12 If the President resigns or is removed by the vote of the Union General Meeting from office during his or her term the following procedure regarding the continuation of sabbatical leave and award and allowance shall be followed:

i) Resignation: normally the sabbatical leave and the award and allowance shall be discontinued from the effective date of resignation, but in special circumstances consideration shall be given by the Senate to the continuance of such leave and award on the recommendation of the Honorary Treasurer after consultation with the Union Council and the Registrar and Secretary.

ii) Removal: the sabbatical leave together with the award, but not the allowance, shall continue for at least four weeks from the effective date of removal at which time the Honorary Treasurer shall recommend to the Senate, after consultation with the Union Council and the Registrar and Secretary, whether or for what period such leave and award should be continued.

13 In the event of an award being continued on the resignation or removal of the President during his or her term of office, the sum involved after such resignation or removal shall be met in whole by the Union.

14 In the event of a President taking up office in mid-term an application for grant of sabbatical leave shall be subject to special consideration by the Senate.

15 The awards made to the Deputy President, Communications Secretary, Treasurer of the Union, Women's Officer and President of the Athletic Association for the period of their sabbatical year shall be met by the Union.

ii) Removal: the sabbatical leave together with the award, but not the allowance, shall continue for at least four weeks from the effective date of removal at which time the Honorary Treasurer shall recommend to the Senate, after consultation with the Union Council and the Registrar and Secretary, whether or for what period such leave and award should be continued.
