Election, responsibilities, functions and periods of office of Chairpersons of the Faculties
1 The Chairperson of each Faculty Board, shall be elected by and from the members of that Faculty Board.
2 The Chairperson of each Faculty Board shall be elected at the first meeting of the Faculty Board to be held in the first semester and shall hold office until the date of the corresponding meeting in the next academic year.
3 In the event of a Chairperson of a Faculty Board resigning before the completion of their term of office, an election shall be held for a new Chairperson at the first meeting of the Faculty Board following the meeting of the Faculty Board which accepted the Chairperson's offer of resignation. In such a case the Chairperson shall continue in office until the appointment of a new Chairperson.
4 A Faculty Board may elect a Deputy Chairperson, who may act in place of the Chairperson in the event of the Chairperson being prevented by illness or any other reason from attending a meeting of the Faculty Board.
5 The Chairperson of each Faculty Board shall be ex-officio a member of every Committee of that Faculty.
6 It shall be the duty of the Chairperson of each Faculty Board:
i) To approve the preparation of business for and the minutes of meetings of the Faculty Board.
ii) To serve as Chairperson at meetings of the Faculty Board.
iii) To supervise all matters governing elections to membership of the Faculty Board or to the office of Chairperson of the Faculty Board or governing appointment to the office of Dean of the Faculty.
7 The Chairperson of a Faculty Board may resign by writing addressed to the Faculty Board of which he or she is Chairperson.
The University's Charter and Statutes provide for the governance of the University to be carried out by a number of persons and bodies, including the Senate and the Statutory Departments. The Statutes require these Departments to be grouped into Faculties, each having a Faculty Board. The Senate has resolved to change this method of governance, replacing the Faculties and Departments with academic Schools.
Pending changes to the Statutes which will require the approval of the Privy Council, transitional arrangements will apply which involve the delegation of the functions and powers of the Statutory Bodies to new bodies. Under these transitional arrangements, the above Regulation is obsolete, The responsibilities of the Chairpersons of the Faculty Boards have been delegated to the Deans of Schools.
